Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact

Illinois’s Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon was on campus today! She and Donna Carroll conducted a signing ceremony for the Illinois Sustainability Compact  at about noon at the Founders’ Court of Parmer Hall.  According to a press release from the office of the lieutenant governor, the Illinois Sustainability Compact asks universities to meet environmentally-conscious goals by 2015. Dominican has pledged at the silver level, and Carroll said she seeks to go for gold soon. In the spring, Dominican had started 4RFuture, a plan that will help the school become more environmentally friendly through conservation of water, energy and the rest of the environment.

“You should be very proud of yourselves,” Simon said.

About 60 faculty, students and staff attended the ceremony. Christina Belmont, a sophomore who came to the event, said, “It’s really important we support Dominican’s effort to further become an eco-friendly school. This is a huge step forward; we are an example for other universities.”

There will be a lecture by sustainability leader Anthony Cortese this afternoon at 4:30 in the Martin Recital Hall. For more information, please refer to Dominican’s press release located here: http://www.dom.edu/newsroom/press/2011/august/article_0008.html.
